psych hospital
today way my first day on the job and what a way to start. i can't divulge too many details but let's just say that vomit, nudity, and broken windows were just a few things i witnessed and dealt with.
the interesting part was that it i was never freaked out or scared or disgusted; i really just wanted to care for the people there. this is my first experience with hospitalized psych patients and it was very interesting. i am amazed at what people go through, and what their minds are doing.
just to paint a picture of what the job looks like, we are in an oldish hospital with 3 units. one for kids, one for adolescents, and one for adults. there are doors separating each unit and they are always magnetically locked, accessible with an employee key card. most of the patients wander around most of the day waiting for meals, activities, and the all important smoke break. my job is to keep an eye out for anything "unusual", monitor vital signs, and report the patient's status and location every 15 minutes. some people are there voluntarily and some are not. basically i am making sure everyone is safe; not hurting themselves or each other.
i imagine that this will produce many, many interesting stories and give me lots of experience in caring for the psychotic and mentally fragile.
i hope that this experience will be enlightening and informative. but i really hope that i can care for them well. we'll see.
